Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid are banking on cutting-edge medical science to help keep their UEFA Champions League dreams alive.

Ronaldo will undergo stem-cell treatment on his torn thigh muscle in an effort to return to the field as quickly as possible, Spanish Radio Station COPE reported Wednesday, according to Thomas Rancero of AS newspaper.

The injury prevented Ronaldo from playing Tuesday in Real Madrid’s goal-less draw against Manchester City in the first leg of the teams’ UEFA Champions League semifinal series, and the advanced treatment could help the Portuguese superstar recover in time for the second leg on May 4.

Ronaldo already has been ruled out of Saturday’s La Liga (Spanish first division) game against Real Sociedad. Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane will wait until next Wednesday to determine Ronaldo’s availability for the crucial Champions League game against Manchester City.

Real Madrid’s attack lacked bite against Manchester City in the first-leg draw. That result, combined with the prospect of Ronaldo missing the second game, increases Real Madrid’s chances of suffering an epic upset in a competition it has won more than any other club … even though we assured readers that wouldn’t be the case.
