Over 25% of adults in the US are affected by knee pain, and it can affect individuals of any age group. Sometimes due to overburdening, unexpected trauma, or injuries; the muscles, ligaments, tendons, or cartilages can secrete certain biochemicals that result in an inflammatory reaction leading to tissue damage. Conventional medications for pain and injuries have reported side effects and complications in the long run, leaving scope for alternative treatment. The traits in regenerative medicine, have observed a solution to this problem in terms of stem cell treatment of knee disorders, for tissue repair and regeneration, in addition to promoting quicker recovery through immune response regulation.
3 Commonly Associated Knee Disorders
- Osteoarthritis
This kind of arthritis affects 27 million people worldwide and there is no age bar. It is the most common form of arthritis and can affect any joint in the human body; the most affected areas include the knees, hips, lower back, and neck. This condition occurs as the articular cartilage (a rubbery cushion that protects the joints), starts to progressively degenerate. Osteoarthritis is an inflammatory disorder thus, as the cartilage wears down, it results in pain, swelling, and locomotory problems. If neglected, Osteoarthritis can further downgrade, due to inflammation reactions in the body, to an extent where the bone may chip off and hover around in joints. The condition can cause intense pain. - Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a sort of autoimmune condition, that mostly affects joints, amongst other parts of the body, triggering inflammatory reactions. This shouldn’t be neglected as it can lead to distorted and painful joints and leave them severely malfunctioned. As time passes, the ailment can start affecting other organs too such as the heart. - Sports injuries
Sports injuries are a common occurrence in professional sports. Increased wear and tear of the locomotive tissues can lead to sprains, strains, dislocations, and even fractures, necessitating immediate medical attention.
How Does Stem Cell Therapy Help in Knee?
The conventional medication, for knee injuries generally dictates surgical rejuvenation or reconstruction of damaged tissue as the only available prospect for knee injury treatment. These surgical procedures lead to various complex problems. Its high time that other alternative treatments, such as stem cell therapy are explored. The developments in stem cell treatment of knee injuries bar the advancement of the damage with more weight on restoring the damaged tissue. Stem cell therapy for knees aims to:
- Slow and restore injured cartilage
- Reduce inflammation and pain
- Conceivably postpone or avert the requirement for knee surgery
Published Reports of Stem Cells in Knee Treatment
For Osteoarthritis, recently, a study was conducted by a group of researchers from the Krembil Research Institute, Canada who investigated the possibility of regenerating knee cartilage using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). By the end of the study, the team assessed a major decrease in pain, a considerable cutback in inflammation within the knee joints of the participants, and a raise in the self-reported value of life.
Aside from bone marrow stem cells, umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells have also been used in stem cell treatments. In a clinical study for rheumatoid arthritis, researchers suggest the therapeutic abilities of umbilical cord tissue-derived MSCs for the treatment. The study reported a significant decrease in Inflammation, and joint deformity recovery, and the pain reduced significantly.
Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal cells (MSCs) can also be used to treat various sports injuries including ligament healing and bone healing. A study by Chamberlain et al., reports that MSC therapy produces a more anti-inflammatory atmosphere. For bone healing, Granero-Molto et al. indicate that Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) possess therapeutic potential in patients with fractures to reduce the time of healing and repair.

I am in the process of searching for a center offering stem cell therapy along with possible traditional surgical procedures e.g. Micro-fracture, High tibial osteotomy, or other techniques for optimising the repair of 1) a focal chondral defect secondary to 2) a medial meniscus degeneration (not sure how much is left of it) in my left knee. I have both X-rays and a relative recent MRI of the knee (Mid-April 2023)
In this regard I’m interested to know which type of mesenchymal stem cell your specialist surgeons are using e.g. embryonic stem cells or adult stem, Adipose-derived stem cells or bonne-marrow derived ?
Also, I would like to know of the cost of procedures
Hello Dr Vithus, Thank you for contacting Advancells. We offer adult mesenchymal stem cells derived from either adipose tissue or bone marrow depending upon medical evaluation.
