The human body is fully covered with the small tiny hair except for the few locations such as palms of our hand or soles of our feet. The term hair loss or alopecia will thus be refereed as the loss of hair from the scalp or all over the body.
Hair is made up many keratinocytes, which are being produced by proteins known as keratins. The keratin is produced in the hair follicles. As and when new hair cells are produced by the keratin, old hair cells are being pushed outside the scalp. Thus the hair, which is visible on our scalp, is actually a string of dead keratinocytes. Thus each growing hair strand is being controlled by the hair follicle and is being influenced by the age, disease and wide variety of factors.
The productivity cycle of each hair follicle is divided into three phases
Anagen:- Active Hair growth
Catagen:- Transitional Phase
Telogen: - Resting stage involving shedding of hair and starting of new cycle.
Physiologically, each hair follicle is extended from the dermal papillae, which are the small projections, extending from the dermis into the epidermis. The main function of the papillae is to provide nourishment and oxygen supply; very important for long, healthy and lustrous hair. These dermal papillae are structurally made up of fibroblast stem cells, progenitor cells and keratinocytes.
In general, comparatively with the younger population, prevalence of hair loss has increased due to many reasons, which are as simple as vitamin deficiency or as complex as surgery or autoimmune disorders. Some of the risk factors associated with the hair loss can be Physical stress, Mental trauma, Depression, Surgery, Treatment, Car Accidents, Flu, Medication Side effects, Environmental Factors
Major Manifestations of Hair Loss, in patients including the following:
Thinning of hair on the scalp
Excessive shedding of hair, with each shaft showing exclamatory signs
A receding hair line
The exposed scalp showing horseshoe shaped pattern
Unusual hair loss on different parts of the body such as eye brows, lashes, etc.
Currently, variety of creams, oils, gels are offered externally along with some methods such as hair grafting, scalp expansion; however, results are unsatisfactory with unnatural look. In today’s jet age, people are more inclined towards finding for permanent solutions rather than opting for choices that require on and off visits to the doctors. Thus, use of stem cells stimulated with autologous PRP can rather be a reasonable option that can provide visually improve hair restoration, texture, strength and growth.
As a principal rule, autologous platelet rich plasma is the richest source of growth factors, which are responsible for stimulating resident stem cells to divide and regenerate rapidly into desired cells. Thus, technology of exploiting stem cells isolated from autologous sources such as adipose tissue, stimulated with your own platelet rich plasma has shown promising results in regulating immune system, hormonal balance, production of new hair follicles and thus improving hair texture and strength.
The goal of Advancells hair loss treatment programme is to stimulate his/her immune system, promote cellular regeneration that will slow down a balding process and spark a new hair growth naturally, to make you regain your confidence level back with the help of stem cell treatments. We have designed a specialized treatment that employes patient's own PRP. Which is actually a plasma rich in the platelets. These pletelets can secrete growth factors and cytokines enabling faster healing and regeneration of damaged cells. Various studies have confirmed that the platelets play a pivotal role in the process of hair restoration by stimulating resident stem cells, promoting follicle regeneration and improving hair strength as well as texture. Our top priority is thus to provide very comprehensive, individualized treatment pattern which is best suited for the patients undergoing treatment, aiming their maximum recovery; according to the pathophysiology of the disease.
At Advancells, in choosing the treatment strategy, we give special consideration to the stages of damage and accordingly the purpose of the treatment will be designed. An algorithm for assessment and treatment is made accordingly. As a part of our treatment, patient's peripheral blood is withdrawn to prepare autologous plasma concentrate highly rich in platelets possessing various growth factors. The stem cells from one of the richest autologous sources of your own body such as Adipose Tissue. will be extracted and stimulated with PRP; this mixture will be infused intradermally around the hair follicles to promote hair regeneration.
Step 1- Qualification For The Treatment
A safety and efficacy assessments will be prescribed by our experts in order to investigate the stage of severity and qualify the patient for the treatment. Following pretreatment assessments can be suggested depending upon the patient's medical and family background:
Pre-Treatment Assessments Hair Loss
Infectious Disease Testing
Routine Blood tests
As per these results, the patient will be counseled further for final decision of protocol.
Step 2- Source Extraction
SVF Cells or Stromal Vascular Fraction Stem Cells are the most entrusted cells, sleeping for years inside the stroma of adiopse tissue; more precisely known as fat. The data accumulated from worldwide clinical trials, and benchside research have endorsed that these stem cells are supported with various structural and functional proteins; which are responsible for skin regeneration and rejuvenation at the cellular level. It is proven that when these stem cells are super charged with autologous platelet rich plasma, they improve blood supply of the skin, ensuring better oxygenenation to cells. Around 100 CC fat is extracted, preferably from the sub-cutaneous layer of the pre-umbilical area. The Adipose tissue will be collected with the application of local anaesthesia; however general anaesthesia can as well be opted in case required.
PRP is rich platelet concentrate, with the seven essential protein growth factors which can rapidly initiate cascade of reactions; additionally it includes three very fundamental proteins that can act as a "Cell Adhesion Molecules" to activate signal transmission. This activation can express the gene, directing the cellular proliferation, matrix formation, osteoid formation and collagen synthesis; which promote tissue repair and regeneration. Reasearch has as well confirmed that after injection in the body, PRP can actively secrete growth factors within 10 mins while more than 95% of them are secreted within 1 hr after activation. Around 30 CC venous blood will be withdrawn from one of the two arms and maintained under controlled condition till processing. In order to prevent unnecessary activation of platelet, the venous blood of the patient will be collected using suitable anticoagulent.
If you are curious to know more about the procedure, kindly refer our detailed snapshot below:
Step 3- Laboratory Processing
100 CC of fat sample along with 30 CC of venous blood, will be transferred to the processing lab; under controlled condition. Both the samples will be processed in the state of the art class 10,000 clean room in compliance with ISO and GMP standards. The isolated stem cells will be characterized for quality, viability and purity. Before infusion, these stem cells will be super stimulated with autologous PRP to maximise the benefits of the treatment.
Step 4- Implantation of SVF Stem Cells Stimulated with Autologous PRP
Once the PRP is ready to be injected back into the body, stem cells will be enriched with autologous PRP prior to infusion, we generally put them back through local intradermal administration through syringes around the hair follicles.
This intra-dermal, local application of PRP with stem cells can accelerate the healing process around the follicles immediately. The approach can stimulate the native stem cells and provide the strength, support, vitality and resilience to the follicles; which will be helpful in generating new hair strands naturally.
Follow up Treatment
Post treatment, the patient will be asked to visit the doctors for reclamation therapies such as Physiotherapy, patients counselling etc. for accelerated recovery.
"Mr. Arun a 35 year old, professional desperately wanted to restore his frontal hairline back. In a very young age, he had lost majority of his hair from frontal and crown area of his scalp. Like many of the people, his unusual hair loss was a cause of social embarrassment to him"
"Mrs. Aashna Monga, a 53-year-old, professional golfer; underwent combined treatment of PRP and fat derived stem cells with “The Youthful Me”, under the guidance of Dr. Deepali Bhardwaj on 4th February 2017. After receiving stem cells stimulated with patient’s own platelet rich plasma (PRP)"
In many men hair loss follows a very specific pattern of baldness, which is most of the times observed to be hereditary in nature. Some of the environmental factors have also found to be responsible for the male pattern baldness due to unusual activation of some of the secondary hormones; which can ultimately result in thinning of hair follicles, leaving behind balding areas.
What causes hair loss in women?
Hair thinning in women has been observed as a result of many inherent conditions such as auto immunity, hereditary, puberty, etc. Some of the other environmental factors such as age, nutrition, stress, surgery, medication, illness are equally responsible for unusual thinning of hair follicles and hair loss.
How significantly can it bother my life?
This is a very obvious concern expressed by many of the people falling in the category of young generation. Probably many of them may be particular for their appearance and may even don’t know that they might have to live with the problem throughout their life. Among every odds, the soothing news is that the disease is neither painful nor a debilitating. Although, it does not affect once life expectancy; the emotional aspects of being with the disease can be quite challenging part; especially in a society identifying hair as a sign of youth and beauty.
Is there any treatment for the condition?
Traditionally, only topical applicators were available for the condition such as creams, ointments, wigs, etc. However these treatments were not successful in altering the condition or stopping the progression of the disease. However, with the help of modern technology and scientific advancements, it is now possible to implement stem cells treatment as a routine method to treat such a cosmetic condition.
What is PRP?
PRP can be identified as the component of blood that is rich in its platelet content. These platelets are known to secret specific growth factors, required for tissue regeneration and faster initialization of healing process. The safety, efficacy and feasibility of the use of PRP treatment has been confirmed by various clinical studies worldwide; only through which the treatment has been established to be very effective in wide range of clinical problems such as cosmetic surgery, wound healing, sports injury, etc.
How do you perform the procedure?
To isolate platelet rich plasma, approximately 30 ml of blood is withdrawn from the peripheral vein of the person. The blood is spun in the centrifuge tube with the help of a sterile closed system and the platelets are concentrated with the help of our standardized procedure; though which, platelets are being concentrated almost 3X times. The protocol helps us to remove unwanted cells that can delay the process of healing.
At the time of infusions, patients are being given local anaesthesia and PRP is being infused around the follicles in the skin.
Who should opt for the PRP?
Since two decades, PRP is being used as a non surgical alternative for stimulating natural growth of hair follicles, in case of conditions such as thinning of hairs or receding hair line.
The science has proved that the platelet rich blood component secrete various growth factors that are required for faster recovery, hair growth, nutritional supplement of the scalp and follicles. The treatment is found to be effective in highest concentration of platelet and when given locally around the follicles. The effectiveness of the PRP treatment in case of hair restoration has been confirmed by various clinical studies with optimistic results.
What are the expected benefits of PRP?
The PRP treatment will be helpful in promoting hair growth with stronger hair follicles. Typically improvement in hair mass can be visibly confirmed after the treatment. There are devices available, which can as well measure the improvement quantitatively and predict the expected improvements during further period of development. On an average 4 to 6 months are required to visually confirm the PRP treatment outcomes.
