Skin Burn injuries are extremely painful to treat with most procedures being invasive in nature. Despite the traumatic experience, burns leave disfiguring scars that hard to heal. Fortunately, technology comes to our rescue where we can exploit our body’s own cells to heal the burnt area
What are the current approaches for treating skin burns?
Currently, autologous skin grafts are being used for the patients. However, in case of severe burns, it becomes challenging due to limited sites on donor for harvesting a skin graft. This further increases the treatment time. To overcome this shortage, there is the availability of allografts, xenografts, and artificial skin substitutes. However, they do not provide the necessary growth factors for complete healing of the skin. At Advancells, we have developed a robust approach to treating skin burns using PRP therapy combined with stem cell therapy.
How does PRP treatment work?
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a concentrated product obtained from the patient’s own blood. It contains a very high concentration of platelets and growth factors that are known to stimulate wound healing process in our body. Platelets contain more than 300 biologically active compounds and are the key elements involved in blood clotting and wound closure. Since PRP is obtained from one’s own blood, it is completely safe and there is no hyper reaction from application. The procedure is simple and is completed in a very short duration. It works as follow:
- Blood is extracted from the patient
- PRP will be isolated and activated under sterile conditions
- PRP is either injected intralesionally, perilesional or is applied in the form of a gel, topically.
The entire process is tailored according to the degree of burn and affected area. Once administered, the growth factors will be released gradually. PRP contains platelets at a higher threshold than normal for increased activity. This helps in wound closure, faster healing, and reduction of inflammation and pain. The end result is regeneration of new skin layers.
Stem cells help in activation of PRP thus make it more potent in its action. This will make sure that for high degree burns, the treatment is not dependent on other donor sites of the patient. They are extracted in an autologous manner therefore
How is it better?
- Natural healing
- Quick recovery
- Minimally invasive
- No chances of infections
Most of the time, high degree burns can damage the collagen and disrupt new tissue formation. This can lead to extensive scarring. PRP treatment is effective not just for burns but also for treating scarred tissue or burnt area. It has been administered for a variety of conditions like osteoarthritis and even anti-aging treatments.
