Stem Cell Role in Cancer Therapy

For the past 30 years, stem cells have been used to replace blood and immune systems affected by cancer cells, including cancer treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Aside from their use in immuno-reconstitution, stem cells have been shown to help with tissue regeneration and as targeted delivery in cancer treatments. The latest concept of “cancer stem cells” has channelled scientific communities towards a broad area of research and prospective future cancer treatment modalities.

The primary objective of this webinar is to primarily focus on the latest developments in the use of stem cells in cancer treatments, and then to discuss cancer stem cells, which are now regarded as the keystone in the development of cancer, as well as their role in carcinogenesis and their ramifications in the development of new cancer treatment options in the future.

Speaker: Dr. SHALMOLI BHATTACHARYYA, PhD, Dr. Bhattacharyya is heading the department of Biophysics in PGIMER, Chandigarh since 2016. She has successfully set up the facility of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) in her department of Biophysics for profiling of stone constituents for patients referred by various departments at very low cost. Under her leadership, the department started a two year M.Sc program in the Medical Biophysics. She is actively involved in teaching postgraduate students and has mentored more than 40 PhD students as the main guide or co-guide. She was a mentor for the International Newton- Bhabha mentorship program on Stem Cell Biology & Tissue engineering in collaboration with Cardiff University (UK), IIT (Mandi & Ropar, India). Besides this she is a recipient of many national and international awards including the Young Scientist award by the Indian Science Congress and National Scholarship in AISSCE from Govt. of India.

She has various research projects funded by extramural agencies like ICMR, DST and DBT, is a member of many national and international societies and has been part of organising committees for various workshops and conferences.

Coordinator: Dr. Lipi Singh, PhD, Dr Lipi Singh is the Vice President of Advancells Group in India. Dr Singh has over 18 years of expertise in the field of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, accomplished her postdoctoral research in Stem Cell Biology in 2011 at the City of Hope National Medical Centre & Beckman Research Centre, California, USA. She received an esteemed postdoctoral fellowship from the “California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, USA” for her work on pancreatic stem cells for replacement therapy of Type I Diabetes. She is also an active member (Clinical Fellow) of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in Florida, USA. She received her PhD in Pancreatology from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, India.

She has extensive experience in stem cell therapy, as well as product development and technology. The company successfully identified and purified hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic stem cells from a variety of sources, and banked them for future therapeutic purposes, under her leadership. She has a broad background in GMP-based cell production, as well as Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs in stem cell therapeutics and clinical studies. Her contributions in stem cell processing, banking, research, and therapies have garnered her national and international acclaim.

Presently, she is working with Advancells Group, India, to create a frontier of wellbeing through regenerative medicine, which is a pivotal necessity for health care worldwide. This encompasses overall health and endurance, as well as raising global awareness of “A new era of wellbeing through Regenerative Medicine.
