New Delhi, October 27, 2015: New-Delhi based Stem Cell Therapy solution providers, Advancells, is showing tremendous success in treating Nishani S., a 29-year-old South African Banker of Macular Degeneration. Nishani has now started showing drastic improvement in her vision that has improved to 6/24 from 6/60.
The major blinding disease of macular degeneration results in the loss of central vision because the light-detecting cone photoreceptors stop working. Scientific advances in macular degeneration research have given us a better understanding of what causes the disease and an array of treatments that can slow down or stop the blinding effects of bleeding in the wet form of the disease. However, till now medical sciences had nothing to offer patients who have already lost their vision to this disease.
The new field of regenerative medicine and of stem cell therapy in particular, holds out the promise of replacing the retinal cells that die due to macular degeneration and of restoring some degree of vision to those patients.
Commenting on this therapy performed jointly by Dr. Neha Sharma Kandhari, Sr. Consultant Ophthalmologist, IBS Hospital, Delhi and Dr. Mayank Jain, Sr. Consultant, Regenerative Medicine, Advancells, Dr Mayank elaborated, “Nishani is a young patient who came to us with a hereditary case of Best disease. It is a form of ophthalmological disorder where the macula starts to degenerate thus restricting the vision of the patient. She had come with a vision of 6/60 and was unable to clearly see the details of objects. We injected autologous bone marrow and adipose tissue stem cells into her eyes and in 3 days she reported the increase of vision to 6/24. Nishani is now making steady improvements and is able to see more detailing in faces and recognizing objects from a larger distance as well.”
Loss of vision can have a huge impact on a person’s life, but many of the disorders that cause blindness are currently difficult or impossible to treat. Stem Cells is the only science that aims at correcting a problem from its roots. Macular degeneration appears as a strong candidate for stem cell therapy because the loss of vision is caused by loss of a single cell type. Fortunately, it is a slowly progressive disease, which means that the diagnosis for the disease can be envisioned on time and the patient can accordingly provide one’s skin or blood sample for production of iPSCs and eventually have their engineered stem cells transplanted into the retina to restore vision at any age.
Vipul Jain, CEO of Advancells said, we believe that Stem Cell Therapies are underrated treatments for severe health conditions. People are skeptical of reaching out for the treatments and rather opting for conventional methods which are not only expensive but also put patients in alot of pain during treatment. We at Advancells aims that after seeing and reading about successful treatments each day, people will develop their faith in Stem Cell Therapy and will start availing the benefits from the treatments we are offering”.
